Justice Library
The Justice Library is a collection of books and videos on
Biblical Justice. The resources are used in the JustFaith Seminar
throughout the year and are available for borrowing to any parish member. The
library is located on a shelf in the front meeting room of the Parish Office and
is available for browsing or checkout any time the Parish Office is open.

Catholic Social Teaching and the U.S. Economy, National
Conference of Catholic Bishops, United States Catholic Conference. "As
followers of Jesus Christ and participants in a powerful economy, Catholics in
the United States are called to work for greater economic justice in the face
of persistent poverty, growing income gaps, and increasing discussion of
economic issues in the United States and around the world." 148 pages. |

Raged Edge Press. This book is a presentation of the Sister Parish movement,
the history behind it, and the new understanding of the gospel that comes to

Good News. This book is a collection of short essays on living a simpler,
gospel based life in the midst of a consumer oriented society. 281 pages. |
 | Gandhi, The Man, Nilgiri Press. This is an
inspiring biography of Gandhi, whose life of non-violence and service led to
the independence of India without a bloody civil war. 173 pages. |
 | Sustaining the Common Good, A Christian Perspective
on the Global Economy, John B. Cobb. Jr. This book is an analysis of the
assumptions of the economic theory on which the current global economy is
based and of the dramatic increase in poverty for most of the world to which
the global economy has led. It offers alternative approaches for less wealth
but more justice and a sustainable life for the earth. 131 pages. |
 | The Powers That Be, Theology for a New Millennium, Walter
Wink, Galilee Doubleday. This book is a theological presentation of the
call to nonviolence as found in the Gospel. It presents as a myth which fails
the test of reality the instinctive
assumption that destruction of enemies solves problems, and presents real world examples of the victory of
non-violence over evil. 200 pages. |
 | The Prophetic Imagination, Walter
Brueggemann, Fortress Press. This book is a theological study of Biblical
Prophecy, and its role in criticizing the indifference of political power to
the poor and marginalized. It describes the prophetic call to an energized
community based on compassion in place of indifference and material complacency. 125 pages. |
 | Rich Christians In an Age of Hunger, Ronald
J. Sider, Word Publishing. This book is a classic study with great factual
detail of the reality and causes of global hunger. Divided into four parts, it
discusses 1) assumptions and facts about poverty in the U.S. and the world, 2)
the Biblical foundations of justice 3) the causes of poverty and 4) ways that
the ordinary Christian can make a difference. 272 pages.. |

Videos:
 | Enemies of War, South Carolina Education
Television. This is a documentary about the murder of six Salvadoran Jesuits
who spoke out for justice for the poor. Their martyrdom was the catalyst that
began the peace process that ended 20 years of civil war that took the lives
of 75.000 civilians. Length: 1 hour. |
 | The Global Banquet, Politics of Food, Maryknoll
World Productions. This is a documentary of about the growing trend of food
production to be controlled by large agri-business corporations that are
driving small farmers in the United States and developing countries off their
family land. This trend has dramatically increased world hunger by growing
crops for export to the developed countries at the expense of the poor.

 | Banking on Life and Debt, Maryknoll World
Productions. This is a documentary about the global debt crisis that has 90%
of the earth’s population trapped in multibillion dollar loan repayments
that force poor countries to produce crops for export so that they cannot feed
or care for their own population. Length: 28 minutes. |
 | Romero, Vidmark Entertainment. This is a
powerful full length feature film about the life and death of Archbishop Oscar
Romero of El Salavador. He was assassinated by the Salvadoran military for
speaking out against the oppression of the poor. He is venerated as a saint
and martyr in Latin America. Length: 105 minutes. |
 | Arms for the Poor, Maryknoll World Productions.
This is a documentary about the "murky world or our weapons-export
business", which loans money to third world countries to build up
military regimes to use against their own people when they organize for their
rights and a better life. Length: 25 minutes. |
 | SOA: Guns and Greed, Maryknoll World
Productions. This is a documentary about the School of the Americas (now named
WIHSC, Western Institute for Hemispheric Security Cooperation) and the 10 year
old non-violent movement to close it. The SOA is a U.S.Army training camp for
Latin American military whose graduates have been responsible for the murder
of thousands of civilians in Latin America. Among its graduates are Manuel
Noriega and the murderers of Archbishop Oscar Romero, the six Salvadoran
Jesuit martyrs, and Bishop Juan Gerardi. of Guatemala. Length: 21 minutes. |
 | School of the Americas: An Insider Speaks Out, Maryknoll
World Productions. This is a personal testimony of a retired U.S. Army colonel
who was an instructor at the SOA. He testifies to the brutal ant-civilian
tactics taught at the school. He is now active in the movement to close the
school. Length: 16 minutes. |

Out Box. You may keep the video or book as long as you are using it. Please
return what you borrow as soon as you are finished, so that it is available to
others.
When you return the book or video, please find your index card
in the Checked Out Box, and put it back in the jacket on the book or
video. Thanks.
